Dungeon Preview: Merfolk Swamp

2023.12.26

We've already guided you through the ancient Library of Chaos and the tumultuous Camp Carlyan. Now, we're heading to the Misty Forest to explore a swampy area. Hidden secrets and new challenges await the brave adventurers in this mysterious area.

On the southwest of the Misty Forest lies a huge swampy area that was once a peaceful habitat for all of the Merfolk clans. However, everything has changed drastically since Zelo, the Fallen Druid began conducting experiments on this land. Due to unimaginable mutations, the creatures of the swamp are slowly turned into ferocious monsters. These monsters not only show hostility towards all intruders, but also continue to harm the area's already fragile ecosystem.

The air becomes murkier each day as the decay of the swamp worsens. A long and dreary rainy season shrouds the place as if the sky is mourning for the land plagued by sufferings. The rain, mixed with the putrid stench of the swamp, gives off an overwhelming and eerie vibe. This once serene land is now a dark and danger-ridden zone.

Developer's Notes: In the early stage of development, we wanted to make this dungeon a vibrant wetland rather than a swamp. However, as the game's worldview continued to be polished, our narrative team suggested that the scenes of the dungeon should be closely linked to its backstory to better demonstrate how Zelo's harrowing experiments had corrupted the creatures and environment of Tarisland. After rounds of discussions and revisions, we decided to change the setting of the area from a wetland to a swamp and adjusted some of the monsters' models and textures to highlight their "corrupted" traits.

At the entrance to the Merfolk Swamp, adventurers will encounter a swarm of corrupted Merfolks. These Merfolks live in shoddy huts made of wooden planks, and their lives are completely twisted by the side effects of the experiments. While adult Merfolks attack all invaders they encounter, young Merfolks will run heedlessly to the nearest building to summon reinforcements when they spot an enemy. Adventurers need to be extra careful here and try to stop the young Merfolks before they can summon reinforcements while dealing with attacks.

Developer's Notes: We initially designed a "pursuit battle" gameplay on the way to challenge the 1st boss, which requires players to deal with continuously appearing minions while pursuing the boss. However, in consideration of the overall duration of the dungeon and player experience, we ultimately decided to change it to several waves of minion battles, which require players to adopt the correct priority kill strategy to cope with.

After defeating several waves of Merfolk, adventurers will enter the central dwelling area of the Merfolks, where "Trendsetter" Fraser blocks the way. Once a Merfolk with low intelligence, Fraser grew much smarter and stronger as a result of the transformation experiment.

As the leader of the local Merfolks, Fraser fights is primitive and deadly. Thanks to the intelligence granted by the experiment, he can use healing potions to heal his injuries. When he is caught in an unfavorable situation, he will blow his horn to summon reinforcements from the surrounding Merfolk buildings. Adventurers must use their class skills and ultimates wisely to stop his healing and fight against reinforcements.

The next challenge adventures will face after taking down Fraser is crossing a trail covered in Poisonous Mushrooms. These mushrooms spray noxious spores every once in a while and deal damage to any approaching enemy. What's even more challenging is that certain extremely corrupted mushrooms have evolved the ability to walk, and they will not hesitate to attack any adventurer in sight.

Developer's Notes: Initially, we wanted players to walk on lotus leaves. But, we designed this Poisonous Mushroom zone instead so players must use more complicated strategies to beat the challenge. Players need to draw the minions on the trail to safe areas without Poisonous Mushrooms and kill them.

Adventurers will then arrive at an open field guarded by Kraken, a boss with razor-sharp antennae and powerful muscles. The massive anchor he wields can rip any challenger to pieces. As the terrifying lord of the ocean depths, Kraken not only specializes in using water waves for AoE attacks, but he can also control contaminated water to corrupt the entire battle area. Therefore, he needs to be taken down as quickly as possible.

After traveling through winding paths covered with water, adventurers will enter a serene and mysterious zone. The civilian Merfolks are nowhere to be seen here, and adventures will be met with Darkfin Warriors instead. Like ghosts lurking in the darkness, these elite soldiers hide themselves around the ancient stone devices, watching over every corner. Once enemies are spotted, they will strike swiftly and silently, stopping the invaders from advancing.

Finally, adventurers will reach an ancient and crumbling stone ruin. This is the stronghold of Darkfin General Kanros . Having undergone numerous transformations, Kanros, a creature from a remote alien world, eventually became a terrifying hybrid monster. His body is covered in tough scales, and his daunting eyes reveal his keen and crafty nature.

Kanros is known for his outstanding tactical prowess and poised demeanor. He is not only a fearless warrior but also a brilliant tactician on the battlefield. In his stronghold, an ancient ruin submerged by water, Kanros is able to skillfully manipulate the flowing water around him and drown his enemies. In addition, he summons Darkfin Army reinforcements, who will attempt to destroy the surrounding ice pillars, making things more difficult for the adventurers.

Only smart and courageous warriors can defeat this battle-hardened general.
